How to program 5816 (Vista)

To program a Honeywell 5816 wireless sensor on a VISTA-21iP control panel, you need an alpha-style keypad (like a 6160) to access zone programming.

Enter Programming Mode

Enter the Installer Code (default is 4112) followed by 800. The keypad will display “Installer Code 20” or just “20” (if it is a fixed English keypad, you will need to use an alpha keypad).

Access Zone Programming

Press *56 to enter the Zone Programming menu. When prompted “Set to Confirm?”, press 0 for no (or 1 for yes, though 0 is standard for general use), then press *.

Specify the Zone Number

Enter the two-digit zone number you want to program for the new sensor (e.g., 09, as zones 1-8 are typically reserved for hardwired devices), then press *.

Define Zone Type and Partition

  • Zone Type (ZT): Enter the two-digit code for the desired zone type (e.g., 01 for Entry/Exit delay, 03 for Perimeter). Press * to continue.
  • Partition (P): Enter the partition number (e.g., 1), then press *.
  • Report Code (RC): Enter 10 or 11 to ensure the alarm reports to the central station, then press *.

Enroll the Serial Number and Loop

The panel should prompt for the Input Type (IN). The system will default to RF (wireless) for zones above eight.

  • Auto-Enrollment: At the “Input S/N” prompt, fault and restore the 5816 sensor(separate the magnet from the sensor, then put it back) twice. The panel should beep three times and display the serial number.
  • Manual Entry: Alternatively, you can manually type in the 7-digit serial number found on the sensor’s sticker and press *.

Next, the cursor moves to the loop number (L).

  • For standard door/window use with the included magnet, enter 2.
  • If using the internal wired contacts on the 5816, enter 1. Press * to confirm and move to the summary screen.

Assign Zone Descriptors

Follow the prompts to add zone descriptors (e.g., “FRONT DOOR”, “MASTER BEDROOM WIN”). The system uses a predefined list of words. Press * to move past each selection until you are finished.

Exit Programming

Continue pressing * to accept the settings until you see the “Zn Num” prompt. Enter 00 to exit Zone Programming. Then, press *99 to exit the main Installer Programming mode completely and return to the main screen.

Test the Sensor

Once programming is complete, test the new device by opening and closing the protected door or window to ensure the panel properly indicates the “Fault” condition.
