Vista: How to program 5853

To program a Honeywell 5853 wireless glass break detector into a Vista 21iP system, you must access the system’s programming mode using an alpha-numeric keypad (like the 6160) and then define a new wireless zone.

Pre-Programming Steps

  1. Obtain the Installer Code: The default installer code is 4112. If this code has been changed and you do not know it, you must use the “backdoor method” by powering down the panel completely and pressing * and # simultaneously within 50 seconds of powering it back up.
  2. Locate the Serial Number: Open the 5853 detector by prying open the front cover. Locate the serial number on a sticker inside the device. You will also need to ensure the battery activation tab has been removed to power it on.

Programming the Sensor (Zone Programming)

  1. Enter Programming Mode: On your alpha keypad, enter your Installer Code (e.g., 4112) followed by 800. The keypad should display “Installer Code 20” or just “20”.
  2. Enter Zone Programming: Press *56 to enter the zone programming menu.
  3. Specify Zone Number: The keypad will prompt “Enter Zone Number”. Enter a two-digit unused zone number (e.g., 10) followed by *.
  4. Confirm Zone Settings: The keypad will display a summary screen. Press * to accept the default settings and move to the “Zone Type” field.
  5. Set Zone Type (ZT): Enter the two-digit zone type code for a glass break, typically **23** (for an audible alarm zone) or similar depending on your desired alarm response. Press * to confirm.
  6. Set Hardwire Type (HT): For a wireless sensor, the system may automatically select a type. Press * to move past this, ensuring it is set for a wireless device.
  7. Enroll Serial Number: When prompted for the serial number, you can either:
    • Manual Entry: Manually type in the 7-digit serial number from the sensor’s sticker. Press * to confirm.
    • Learn-In: Activate the sensor (e.g., by creating a “thud” sound or removing/reinserting the battery) twice. The panel should beep and display the serial number.
  1. Set Loop Number: The system will prompt for the loop number. For the 5853, the loop number is 1. Enter 1 and press * to confirm.
  2. Assign Zone Descriptor (Optional): The panel allows you to enter custom text descriptors (e.g., “FAMILY ROOM”) using the keypad’s alphanumeric entry method. Press * to skip this or 0 when finished.
  3. Confirm and Exit Zone Programming: The zone summary will appear. Press * to accept. At the “Enter Zone Number” prompt, enter 00 to exit zone programming.

Final Steps

  1. Exit System Programming: Enter *99 to exit the main programming mode. The keypad should display “Disarmed Ready to Arm”.
  2. Test the Sensor: Arm the system and test the glass break detector using a glass break simulator like the Honeywell FG71 to ensure it properly triggers the alarm.
