ADC: How to create camera recording rule

To create a camera recording rule on Alarm.com, you must use the customer website or mobile app to define what events should trigger a recording (e.g., motion, system armed/disarmed status, etc.).

Using the Alarm.com Website

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com customer website.
  2. Navigate to the Video section and then click Recording Rules.
  3. Click + Add New Rule.
  4. Select the type of rule you want to create (e.g., Video Analytics, Video Motion Detection (VMD), Alarm, Sensor Opened/Closed, Doorbell Call, etc.). The available options depend on your service plan and equipment.
  5. Name the new recording rule.
  6. Configure the rule settings. This involves selecting the specific camera, defining the trigger conditions (e.g., drawing a ground zone or trip wire for Video Analytics), and setting parameters like the minimum delay between clips.
  7. Customize when the rule runs (e.g., at all times, only during specific times/days, or when the system is armed/disarmed).
  8. Set up notifications if you want to be alerted when a clip is recorded. You can add recipients and choose whether to receive a text, thumbnail, or the full video clip.
  9. Verify all settings are correct, then click Save Rule.

Using the Alarm.com Mobile App

Note that only Video Analytics rules can be created and edited using both the website and the app; most other rules require the website.

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com app.
  2. Tap the Menu icon.
  3. Tap Video, then tap the Settings gear icon.
  4. Tap Recording Rules and then tap Add.
  5. Select Video Analytics and choose the desired camera.
  6. Follow the prompts to configure the trigger, schedule, and notifications, similar to the website process.
  7. Tap Save when done.

For Continuous (24/7) Recording

For continuous 24/7 recording, you typically need a compatible camera with an inserted SD card (onboard recording) or a Stream Video Recorder (SVR) device. This is configured under the Local Recordings option within the Recording Rules section of the website.
